The living room may be the most used room of a home, but the kitchen is the soul. It’s where the family gathers for meals, and where you can find someone looking for a snack, a cup of tea or coffee, or just to chat. Why not make it a cozy, personal space with some handmade items? The kitchen, more than any other room in the house, is bursting with possible knitting projects.

You can start at the table. Knitted placemats are a great idea, especially because you can make different ones for different occasions, some formal, some cozy and homey. As with other projects, making holiday themed placemats is an easy, cheap, and fun way to be sure that you’re ready for every special occasion. And really, who doesn’t want placemats for St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, and even specific family members’ birthdays.

Then there’s the table itself. If your kitchen is small and you have just enough room for one of those small bistro tables, then go right ahead and knit an entire table cloth. Just like with the place mats, you want to be sure you use yarn that can be easily cleaned. If your table is big though, it would be much better to simply make a table runner. The nice thing about this is that you can make it match the placemats you’ve already made, especially the holiday ones.

There is also the very fun tea cozy, a favorite of knitters. You’ll never be short of patterns, there are hundreds of them easily found online. There are also knitted mug cozies, and even the fun but not exactly practical beer cozy.

While we’re talking about hot things, there are also easy to knit pot holders and trivets. Knitted pot holders are another great and easy project, as long you remember their purpose and are sure to use thick yarn and make two or three layers which then get sewn together for maximum protection.

You can also make knitted dishcloths and dish towels. This is another project where the choice of yarn is very important, so in this case you would want to use a cotton yarn, so it can stand up against all the washing and scrubbing.

The kitchen gives you plenty of chances to create great knitting projects, especially if you want to start on decorating for each holiday. Then you’ll have something personal, special, and festive no matter what time of year.
