all about the different kinds of yarn

When knitting for your home, the place you look for comfort and coziness can’t be ignored.  Your bedroom is a place where there are so many great knitting projects just waiting for you. The best thing about making your own decorating projects is that you really indulge your whims there. Maybe you love a bright orange color that your family can’t stand, or maybe you live in a house where you simply don’t have much say in the decorating. Your bedroom is the place where you can bring your ideas and preferences about decorating to life.

You can start small, with great projects like sachets for your drawers to keep your clothes smelling pretty. Sachets are great because you can infuse them with any smell you like. For example, maybe you love the smell of peppermint but can’t stand rosemary? You can make beautiful peppermint sachets for each of your drawers.

Another great, small project is a door hanger. You can keep these simple, just putting your name on it, or you can even make ones for different moods, with phrases like “Come On In” or the always useful “Enter at Your Own Risk”. These are usually embroidered on afterwards, which is a great way to use more than one crafting skill for a project.

Then there’s the actual bed. You might have already tried cases for throw pillow for another room, maybe the living room, but they work just as well here. You can choose colors and designs that compliment your bedspread and the colors in your room. You can also make a throw blanket, which is useful for extra chilly evenings when you need that extra layer, or even for those quiet afternoons when you’re curled up with a favorite book. These blankets tend to end up all over the house, so don’t be surprised if you discover that someone in your family has borrowed your favorite blanket and doesn’t want to give it back. Be prepared to make a few for everyone.

Small throw rugs also make a cozy bedroom even cozier. Having a handmade rug to step on just as you hop out of bed is a comforting way to start the day. Rugs like these come in all patterns but it’s important to use yarn that can stand up to all the, well, standing. There are some spiral patterns that tell you to first knit a very long coil, then sew it up and these are always fun to make. These rugs are especially great if you have hardwood floors or something similar, but also look beautiful layered over wall to wall carpeting.

There are lots of ways of personalizing a room with knit projects and your bedroom is a great place to really let your creative side shine. And many of these projects can be transferred to another room, like a throw rug for the kitchen, so if you really enjoyed a certain project, remember, there’s always a good reason to make another just like it.
