DIY HOW TO SEW A VINTAGE INSPIRED HALLOWEEN PILLOW

Sharing is caring!

Capture the spirit of Halloween from days gone by and learn how to make this charming vintage looking handmade pillow. If you have an old Halloween card or photo that you’d like to turn into a lovely Halloween pillow it’s easy to do. To create the front cover of your pillow you will need a computer, printer, and sew-in fabric computer paper sheets. These are pretty expensive, but I love crafting with them and I use them in many of my crafts and quilts and gifts that I make for family and friends.

Search the internet for vintage Halloween cards. Make sure there are no copyright laws against the one you want to print. Most places do not mind as long as it is for personal use and not resale. There is a wonderful site that has free vintage images called the graphic fairy. Then simply print them on the computer fabric sheets. In the photo below, you will see that I printed two different ones on one sheet to try and save money and computer fabric sheets.

FOR THIS PROJECT YOU WILL NEED:

a black cat in a pumpkin

When you size your vintage print make sure you leave at least a 1/4″ border around the print. You will need that 1/4″ to use as a seam allowance.

Cut the black strip of fabric to fit the long side of your image. Pin pretty sides together. Stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Do the same to the other side.

Press the seams you just sewed towards the black border. Next cut the black strip to fit the short sides. Make sure you line up the black border before you cut it.

Press those seams in the same manner.

Now your black border is finished, we are going to sew the orange border. Cut and sew the orange strips of fabric in the same manner you did the black strips.

Once the orange border is added and pressed, it’s time to attach a pretty bow in the corner. Just tie a bow from ribbon and hand sew it in the corner or on the top of your picture, wherever you think it looks the best.

Using your pillow front as a guide, measure it, and then cut a pillow back the same size as the front. Pin front and back of pillow pretty sides together. Leave a 3.5″ opening on one side for turning. Stitch around pillow pivoting at the corners. (Make sure you do not sew at the opening.)

Clip your corners and trim the seams.

Turn your pillow pretty side out and stuff.
