2018 End of the Year Party/Picnic “The Olympics”

Sharing is caring!

2017 – 2018 brings our studio to celebrating 17 years of teaching kids to sew and design! At the end of our school-year weekly program we celebrate with an End-of-the-Year Party/Picnic and each year is a different theme. This year’s theme: THE OLYMPICS

Each nightly class represented a different country, and each country signed up for 3 Olympic sports to see who could win the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. We also had design competitions! (Unfortunately it rained this year so our event was held inside.)

How fitting for our Olympic medal display with Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals to be draped over Jessica’s Junior Olympics National Championships gymnastics jacket as it fit right in with our theme!

Olympic Sport Competition:

SUMO WRESTLING:  Each country picked one of their girls to be the sumo wrestler. Each country was given 8 balloons to blow up and stuff the girl’s over-sized tops. The first country to blow up all balloons and make their athlete into a Sumo Wrester won the gold medal. Congrats to team Greece who won the gold medal in this competition.

Design Competition:

Design an Olympic Medal: Each team was given a pencil, a pair of scissors, one pizza box lid, and a hot glue gun. Their challenge as a group was to design a 3D olympic medal. They were given 15 minutes to complete the challenge. The judges spray painted the winning medals accordingly. Congrats to team Italy who won the Gold!

Our little Sumo Wrestler, who became our biggest Sumo Wrestler after all the balloons were stuffed under her over-sized sweater. Isabella won the silver medal for her team, Ireland.

Mariel, Molly, and Sarah getting their trophies. Mariel 6th year, Molly 5th year, and Sarah 9th year. What dedicated sewing students! (Missing: Julia, 5th year student.)

What an honor it is to earn our special awards, Student of the Year, and Designer of the Year. Each year 4 – 5 students of our 35 students in our school year program are nominated by our instructors for these awards. This year, Hailey was chosen as Student of the Year, and Olivia was chosen as Designer of the Year. Congrats girls!

Olympic Sport Competition:

CURLING:  It is only fitting since the US made history in winning the Gold medal in this year’s winter olympics that we include Curling as one of competitions. The athletes (students) had to slide the stones (oreos) across the ice (table) and into the square. The country with the most stones inside the square wins the gold medal.

Congrats to Olivia, Ally, Mika, and Kayla getting their 2nd year awards!

Sewing student Olivia concentrating while competing in our Ice Hockey Olympic game. From the center line students had to make a shot into the goal with an ice-cube using a chop stick. It was not as easy as you think! Team Spain: Our Thursday night Senior Sewing Class.
Team USA: Our WINNER of the group best costume and team spirit award! Our Wednesday night Senior Sewing Class. Other fun games and events we played:

Olympic Sport – Archery: Students had to throw spools of thread into the center of a wooden quilt hoop ring.

Design Competition – Design an Olympic Logo – As a team, the students had to design a new Olympic logo.

Design an Olympic Costume – Students were to design an Olympic Competition, according to the country, gender, and sport they were giving on a piece of paper.

Olympic Sport – Discus Throw: Students had to toss a paper plate onto other plates with numbers on them.

A special thank you to Emily, Zoe, and Shannon for helping out at the party and making our celebration so special.

Congrats to ALL of our Sewing Students for completing another full year of design and dedication to your love of sewing!
