Learn To Make a Patriotic Raggedy Quilt Flag Pillow

Sharing is caring!

I could not believe the price of this raggedy flag pillow when I saw it for sale in a cute little antique shop at one of the New Jersey beaches for $39.99. This project can be made in less than an hour, and for less than $3.00 by using strips of scrap fabric, and craft stuffing or left over quilt batting for stuffing. What’s great about this project is that all fabrics are ripped and sewn on for the “ragged” look on this primitive Americana Raggedy Flag Pillow!

I ADORED MAKING THIS PATRIOTIC AMERICAN FLAG PILLOW! HERE IS WHAT I USED TO MAKE IT:

  • 2 cream pieces of fabric ripped to the size 14″ x 18″
  • 1 piece of blue fabric ripped to the size 9.5″ x 6.5″
  • 3 strips of red fabric ripped to the size 10″ x 1.5″
  • 3 strips of red fabric ripped to the size 18″ x 1.5″
  • craft stuffing or left over quilt batting
  • basic sewing supplies

American Flag Pillow – Step 1

Since this is a primitive raggedy flag pillow make sure that all edges of your fabric are ripped and fraying. This is the look we want for this project. First you are going to place all the strips and blue rectangle on top of one of the cream pieces of fabric to see how your flag will look.

American Flag Pillow – Step 2

Next pin all the red strips PRETTY SIDE UP on ONE of the PRETTY SIDES of the cream pieces of fabric. This will be the pillow front. Sew down each side of the long ends of each strip using the pressure foot as your guide.

Then you are going to pin the blue rectangle fabric on the top left of the pillow front, just covering the red strips. Sew around the blue rectangle pivoting at the corners using the pressure foot as your guide.

American Flag Pillow – Step 4

Now pin the pillow top to the pillow back around the outer edge as shown with the wrong sides together. Sew around the outer edge using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Leave a 4″ opening to stuff the pillow. Stuff the pillow with craft stuffing or fiber filling. I use ripped up left over quilt batting!

American Flag Pillow – Step 5

Either by hand or on the sewing machine, stitch the 4″ opening closed. To make the raggedy flag pillow more “ragged” you can pull loose threads of the fabric!

Your raggedy primitive patriotic flag pillow is done!
