After teaching hundreds of kids and adults how to sew for the past 25 years, I have found it is best to make the technical end of this hobby or craft as easy as possible for the student. The creative and fun end of the hobby comes natural to most people (style, color choices, a vision, etc…), however, executing the process and learning the machine and different techniques comes the challenge. Therefore here is what we look for when purchasing our favorite machines.
- Make sure the machine will NOT sew if the pressure foot has been left up.
- Make sure the machine offers an EASY back-stitch button, not like the machine shown where the student has to press a large lever down.
- Make sure the machine has an up/down button for the needle, and the student does NOT have to move the hand wheel to raise or lower the needle.
- Make sure the tension button is at the top of the machine and out of the way when a student is threading the machine. So it is not easily moved.
- Most importantly, make sure the machine has a speed control button. This helps tremendously!
- Make sure the machine offers easy stitch width and length options. NOT, turning a hard-to-turn knob, like shown.
- Do NOT purchase a sewing machine with a metal bobbin case. (These are such a pain!) The drop-in plastic bobbins are the easiest to thread and control.
